Doing a garden design can be a bit overwhelming. There are so many aspects to consider. Such as garden layout, sun, view, garden style, drainage just to name a few.  The smartest way to tackle this job is do what the professional do, put all this information down on paper.  Most people have a idea of what garden style they like, and if you don't start looking in magazines or on the internet and you will find yourself being drawn to a certain style. This process also helps if you are thinking about hiring a professional landscaper.  Showing them garden designs that you like helps them create the space you want.

Before you begin your garden design ask yourself how much time do I have to spend taking care of the space?  A person, like myself, finds it very relaxing to be out in the garden pruning, weeding and planting flowers. But my husband thinks of it like hard work and he needs a garden that requires very little maintenance.

It is also helpful to make a list of what you would like to have in your garden. Some of the elements you may want is arbors, decks, walks, or perennial beds. The best way to think about how any outdoor space is to be designed and arranged is to look at it as an outdoor room.  Your new "garden room" needs it own style that convey the mood and style that is uniquely your own. Your style and type of your house you have is another important aspect in deciding your garden design. If your house is modern with sleek lines you would not use a cottage style garden design. If you have a cottage style house you probably would not have a formal garden design. Remember your garden design should be used to frame your house like a picture.

Choosing a Style of Garden Design

Choosing a style helps make all the elements of the landscape come together. Different styles can be used in different parts of the yard but limit yourself. There is nothing wrong with a perennial flower bed which in most cases consider natural or cottage styles in a formal garden design.

Formal garden design  

Formal garden design are usually defined by the left side is a mirror image of the right side. It includes tightly clipped hedges and geometric patterns like the picture above. It works best if the house is also formal with the door in the center and matching windows on either side. It is easy to balance the yard because what ever is planted on the right is planted on the left. Formal garden can be labor intense by all the pruning and hedging.

Informal Garden Design

The informal garden design is the most common because most houses built now are informal. The left and right sides are different but they still need to appear balance. This is accomplished by the same amount of greenery on either side of the door. Our busy lifestyle makes this design easy to maintained by just yearly pruning and trimming.

English Garden Design

The English garden design are mark by large lawn surrounded by flower beds. Because most homes now do not have large yard the English cottage gardens have come popular with very little lawn and large perennials beds. When planting a perennial flower garden make sure your plants requirement are the same in regards to sunlight and watering requirements.   Flower color is important as well as flowering season. Reds and oranges are exciting while pinks and blues are soothing.

Natural Garden Design

Natural garden design, or sometime called woodland garden design looks like your house was dropped in the middle of undisturbed piece of land. Native plants are planted in irregular patterns and can be very low maintenance.

Japanese Garden Design 

Japanese garden are usually define by irregular shaped trees and shrubs in intricate patterns or arrangements. Great expertise is required to design a traditional Japanese garden.
