If you have gone to a garden center it can be a little overwhelming on all the different garden plants that is offered. Its not long and you have a number of plants in your cart that you love the flowers on it, or love the unusual texture or color it is. If you are like most of us, you have no idea what the garden plant requires, full sun, shade, lots of water or have any idea where you are going to put the garden plants when you get home. When you get home, you wonder how you are going to create a beautiful garden with these plants. In most cases you end up with garden plants that do not require the same amount of sunlight or watering and in a few weeks or months end up with some dead plants. Does this sound familiar?

Before you head to your garden nursery, decide what area you are going to work on. If you are doing a whole yard, divide it up in to smaller spaces so it not so overwhelming. A few well-selected  garden plants can have a greater impact and appeal than a mix match selection of one of these plants and one of those here. Unity is achieved in garden design by consistency. Planting in groups of 3's, 5's, 7's also give a sense of intentional design, balance and unity.

Good color combination can have a dramatic impact in garden design. Choosing plants that compliment or contrast with each other is essential. I use the color wheel below to give you some examples of different combination. Color next to each other have little contrast and will tend to blend together well. Colors directly across from each other and at 90 degrees from a color will have the greatest contrast and can be used as complimentary colors.

The most common complimentary combinations you see in gardens design are the red and green, yellows and purples, and blues and oranges. These colors become very vibrant and have strong contrast with each other. These colors are useful when you want to make something stand out. A good example is when you use a green shrubs or foliage then plant red flowers in the front of the flower garden. When used together, they create a very vibrant and colorful contrast with each other.

Colors right next to each other on the color wheel, like blue and green or red and orange usually match extremely well but don't create much contrast. These color combinations causes a very soothing feeling and used when you want to create a comfortable calm atmosphere. These colors are usually found in nature and work harmoniously together. In garden plants ideas this scheme often use 3 colors to get good effect. Choose one color as the dominate display, a second one next to it on the color wheel as support and a third color acts as a neutral (black white, or silver/gray) as an accents.

As far as landscape design there are thousands of possibilities. There are countless secondary colors of different hues and tones that go completely off the color wheel. Use the color wheel for general ideas and enjoy the endless possibility. 

Growth habits and characteristics are common mistakes people make when selection garden plants. Usually this is simply because of a lack of knowledge. Find out before you purchase your garden plants the size of the plant at maturity, light requirements, heat and wind tolerance, and soil preference. Also make sure the garden plants is in your particular zoned.

 On the Internet, landscaped books and catalogs there are pre-planned garden designs which is another way to get beautiful plant combinations. Just make sure they are zoned for your area.
