Garden Seeds

Garden seeds are great way to stretch your budget in your garden design. They are many great seeds catalogs, garden centers, and local building supply store that provide a wide assortment of flowers and vegetable seeds.  Seeds can be sow outside after the last frost or many people start they garden seeds inside to give it the extra growing time it needs.

It can be easy and inexpensive to start garden seeds indoors for spring planting. There are many products on the market to start these new seedling and many people use reusable or recycled containers. These containers need good drainage and can be moved easily. Some examples are egg cartons, milk containers, Tupperware and pots made from recycled newspaper. Putting it on a old cookie sheet makes a great planting flats. Enclosing the entire tray with a clear plastic bag until seedling appear helps keeps in heat and moisture.

Planting garden seeds are easy and affordable. One of the most important aspects of starting your garden seeds inside is using the right soil. I use the commercial seed-starting mixes which is usually a mix of vermiculite and peat without any true soil. Garden soil are generally too heavy to provide good root growth. Sow seeds individually into each cell  according to package directions. A rule of thumb is to plant a seed four times as deep as its diameter. I use a misting sprayer instead of a watering can or hose because your baby plants can be damage or uncovered. Covering the tray with clear plastic wrap will also promote germination.

If you are going to sow your garden seeds outside, wait till your area is frost free and plant the seeds according to direction. In many cases I just spread the seed and walk on top of the soil to plant my seeds.  Planting seeds inside or outside is easy and rewarding project and can include children or grandchildren which is fun for both adults and children. Starting seeds indoors can save you money and allows you to grow a varieties of flowers that are special and unusual.

I have found these garden seeds very easy to grow and they provide great color in any garden.

  • Larkspur
  • Zinnias
  • Cosmos
  • Poppy
  • Black-eye Susan
  • Coneflower
  • Gloriosa Daisy
  • Sunflowers

A great vine from garden seeds is a Hyacinth Bean Vine. For fast growing vines Morning Glory and Moon Flower are great. If you have a ugly fence or wants a arbor cover in just one season I use the Hyacinth Bean Vine it provides great coverage and the purple flower is beautiful. In the fall they produces a purple bean pod, if you dry the pods you have seeds for next year inside the pods.

It easy, so try starting your seeds indoors today!
