Austin, TX is located in the center of Texas and is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. Austin is the capitol of Texas and also the home of University of Texas. Austin is known for The Live Music Capital of the World, it has a vibrant live music scene with more per capita than any other city in the U.S. Austin is a great place to live and work. Even with the economical crisis, Austin properties values are still going up and sales are good. In the last 10 years Austin has had tremendously growth and traffic can be a problem. Austin has put in toll roads and other highways to help the situation, but with the growth its hard to keep up. If you are thinking about moving to Austin or have recently move you have found housing to be one of the lowest in the nation. Austin is a great place to raise a family with many recreational facilities plus the many lakes surrounding Austin. Austin climate is great for outdoor activities including walking, bicycling, swimming and camping.
Every day, new people arrive in Austin and pick up shovels and hoes to put down roots in their landscapes. Regardless how successful you might have been elsewhere, you might need to learn to garden all over again now that you are at home in Austin. Horticulturally, Austin is in plant hardiness zone eight, which means plants can withstand low temperatures of 10 degrees above zero. Fortunately, we seldom see 10 degree temperatures and generally do not dip below 20 degrees with any frequency. Winter temperatures can be unpredictable, but summer temperatures are usually hot. Summers are more devastating to our garden than the winters and if you are going to have a flower garden or vegetable garden in Austin, you will have to water in the summer time. As far as rainfall, average tell us little. Austin can anticipate about 32 inches of rain. Rainfall is usually fairly spaced out during the spring, fall and winter. with the summer months usually deficient. The soil in Austin will need to be improve with liberal amounts of compost, peat moss, shredded bark or other organic materials.

For a nice drive thru the Hill Country go to Fredericksburg, Texas to see the Wildseed Farm where they display many different fields of wildflowers and native Texas plants. They also offer for sale many of these plant seeds, plus they have a beautiful nursery. I find their staff knowledgeable on Texas gardening too. Austin has many great garden nurseries, so find one close to where you live and let them help you choice the right plants for your landscape projects.
