Organic Gardening

Many gardeners and people think of organic gardening as  difficult to accomplish and really don't understand what it is. A simple answer is that organic gardening does not use any synthetic fertilizers or pesticides on their plants. Organic gardening is what Mother Nature does, think of your plants as part of a whole system and includes the water supply, wildlife, people and even the insects. An organic gardener is no different then what your grandparents or parents did on their farms and  vegetable gardens years ago. They work with the natural systems to minimize and continually replenish any resources the garden consumes.

I was raised in a small Midwest farming community and my parents were farmers. I didn't realize till years later that my parents were practicing organic gardening. My Dad never put pesticides on his corn or oats and every fall  or spring he would put cow manure on the fields.  My father was a wise man and at the time many thought him crazy, myself included, He said if he used pesticides on his corn, the cows eat the corn, we eat the cows and the pesticides that stayed on the soil would get washed into the steams and river where we drink the water. Pesticides was a poison to kill the insects, so it made perfect sense to him that it would also cause damage to human. How true he was!!

Organic Gardening has become very popular in the last 5 years. My mother was also a organic gardener and I believe that why we have such longevity in our family. My mother would always take the raw vegetables scraps and coffee grounds and throw them in her flowers beds or vegetable garden, and the washing machine water would always get toss on the garden. (soaps have phosphate in it) She would  take paper products and burn them and then toss the ashes on her garden. In the spring my father would always spread some kind of manure on her garden. So you can see how easy it is to become a organic gardener.

Organic gardening has become very popular within the last few years because of the awareness of the health impact pesticides and preservative we have in our food. Our import from foreign countries, and not knowing what is in our food has also become a threat to us all.  If in your gardening you would just pay attention to what you put on your soil and use only organic matter it would make such a different in our world and you would be well on your way to a beautiful, healthy garden organically. You can do your own composting or there are many products on the market today that are organic.
