Rock Garden

Rock Gardens have become very popular in the last few years. They offer great architectural  detail to any garden design. For us that live in central Texas, it is very easy to have a rock garden, because if you do any digging in your yard you will uncover some form of rock and some cases large boulders.

Rock gardens are great for sloping areas or areas of ground you have no other use for. A rock garden only requirement is a good drainage since rock and mountain-growing plants do not grow well in water-bound soil. The main soil areas should be gritty to simulate the natural environment of the plants.

The mistake most people make when building a rock garden is sticking rocks and stones into a mound of  dirt. The area should be excavated, the first layer of the rock garden should be lined by stones. Then one or two large rocks should be laid which will protrude above the ground when the garden has been completed.  When placing these large rocks remember these will be your focal points.  The picture above is a great example of a well laid out rock garden. You notice how your eye goes to the two large rocks and then they put smaller rocks and stones around them. The spaces between the rocks should be fill with rocks and smaller stones and finally a gritty easily drained soil. Mixing sand with topsoil is a good way to promote drainage.

Rock Gardens are great for sloping areas. The best stone to use in your rock garden is limestone, but native rocks in you area works well too. Once you have the rock garden set up with your rock and stones and the gritty soil, it is time to start planting your plants. In placing your plants make pockets among the rocks and stones and fill with good composted soil.

Do not plant seeds, because most of them will get washed away. Perennials are best for a rock garden and you can mix some annuals to give it color all season. The local garden nursery should be able to help you with the best plants selection for your area.  Low growing perennials and annuals works the best like alyssum, verbena, lantana, delosperma and geraniums.
